Graveside services will be 10:00 AM, Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at Eastlawn Memorial Park with Chaplain Dick Williams officiating. The family will receive friends 6 to 7:00 PM, Monday, November 14, 2011 at Heartland Funeral Home.

Berta was born August 18, 1919 in San Saba, Texas to Robert and Myrtle Rawls. She was one of thirteen children. She married John Elvie Deeds in San Saba on August 30, 1934. They were married for 29 years until his death in 1963. Together they raised 6 children.

Berta worked at the Brownwood Feather Factory for 30 years and cared for children in her home until she was in her 80’s. She lived in Early for 65 years and was a member of the Church of Christ in Early.

Berta was a precious and very loved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother. She was a wonderful cook, loved sewing and gardening. She was known for her butter beans and all her grandchildren loved “Grandma’s Gravy” in the morning. Whenever anyone walked through her door, the smell of her excellent cooking could be smelled throughout the house. Her home was the gathering place where everyone always arrived, was welcome and never left hungry. Her heart was filled with love and kindness for everyone in her life. Her beautiful baby blue eyes sparkled brighter than the stars. She will be deeply missed and always cherished.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elvie, her parents, 8 brothers, 4 sisters, her beloved daughter, Patricia Deeds Browder, 2 granddaughters, Vanessa Browder Hall and Joy Deeds, 1 grandson, Steve Cole and 1 great granddaughter, Natashia Deeds

Berta leaves behind her loving children, 2 sons, John Deeds and wife Helen of Brownwood and Ross Deeds of Early, 3 daughters, Wanda Smith and husband Roy of Richland Springs, Mary Cole and husband Cecil of Brownwood and Judy Hall and husband Rex of Hewitt, Texas. She also leaves behind 17 adoring grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren and 24 great great grandchildren, 1 sister Wuanetiah Rodgers of Arkansas and many nieces, nephews and extended family
Pallbearers are grandsons Randy, David, Brian, Johnny, Mikele and Stanley

Our many thanks to Oakridge Manor Nursing Home and Lighthouse Hospice for their kindness and love over the past few years. We would like to thank Karen of Lighthouse Hospice for the daily personal care provided to Berta. Also, the family would like to recognize the Lighthouse Hospices nurses, Hannah, and Nita for the outstanding comfort care, to Oakridge Manor her long standing nurses, Rhonda, Eve and Claudine for their continued love and kindness throughout her stay. She truly loved all the nurses that cared for her.
