For some reason, beets – much like Brussel sprouts and spinach – have built a bad reputation. As kids, we declared them as one of the “yucky” vegetables that Mom added to meals merely to make our lives miserable. How about giving beets a second chance because they’re packed with essential vitamins and minerals – and they’re tasty, too. Plus, beets naturally strengthen your immune system … and have even shown some cancer-fighting properties. Basically, beets are beneficial body boosters. So let’s take a look at some interesting facts about beets:
Beets have almost ZERO saturated fat. Plus, they’re low in calories.
Beets are high in simple carbohydrates, making them an awesome instant source of energy … and unlike processed foods that are high in refined carbohydrates; beets are nutrient-dense and naturally energize your body.
Beets not only fuel – they also cleanse. They contain powerful antioxidants that work hard to cleanse your liver and blood from toxins.
Beets contain magnesium, calcium, iron, fiber, vitamins A and C, folic acid, and even niacin.
Medical studies have shown that including beets in your diet may help protect against heart disease and cancer (especially colon cancer).
Beets can lower your blood pressure because they contain betaine and tryptophan, which relax the mind and create a sense of well-being.
Beets are available year-round. No out-of-season excuses for this ruby-red veggie.
Beets are a natural aphrodisiac.
Beets can be eaten raw or you can boil, steam-roast, or sauté them. Beets are also great for juicing. Even the leaves of raw beets are edible.
