A new home has been found for the horse that had been recently seized due to malnourishment, according to Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Michele Holder.
The new owner is a Brown County man who has agreed to provide for the Bay horse. According to a contract with BCSO, the new owner will provide the proper veterinarian care, feed supplements and periodic visits from Holder to check on the mare’s welfare. A few employees at BCSO had called her Hope, while others called her Mattie, which became the name she is going by now.
The new owner’s boss noticed the news articles written last week about the horse and told the man about the possibility of adopting her; he thought it was a perfect match.
According to Holder, Mattie was picked up by the new owner (who wishes to remain anonymous) yesterday morning. Holder stated that the she seemed to be happy with her new home and owner.
“She just got out of the trailer and started trotting around, checking out her new surroundings,” Holder stated. “His property is definitely bigger than what we had her in and I think she is going to like it there, with room to run around.”
Holder stated that the initial pasture that he will keep her in is about a 10-15 acre plot and that there are other locations he has available for her when she is in better health.
Holder stated that the new owner is no stranger to horses, as he has had one in the past but had to sell. According to Holder, he was very happy to be a horse owner again. Mattie, if able to get back to proper health, will be a pleasure horse for him.
“The new owner is very happy with having her, in fact he already bought about 50 bales of alfalfa hay,” said Holder. “His last horse was also malnourished and he had nursed her back to health and is looking forward to the same results for this one. I think they make a really good match.”
Holder stated that the contract with the new owner states that if circumstances change for any reason and the adoption doesn’t work out, BCSO will help in the efforts of a new adoption to make sure Mattie doesn’t get back into the same situation of an owner that cannot provide for her.
