Howard Payne won 73-53 over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor for their 20th win of the season Saturday afternoon.
The 73-53 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor gave the Lady Jackets their twentieth win of the season. It is the seventh consecutive 20-win season for the HPU women.
With a 10 point lead at the half, the Lady Jackets expanded the lead out to 20 with 10 minutes remaining. UMHB made a run and came within 9 with 5:15 remaining. From that point HPU went on an 8-0 run to get the lead back to 17 and end any threat of a comeback.
Brittany Zamora led HPU with 26 points. Behind her was senior Hope Hohertz with a double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds. Senior Elaine Hobbs who has also had a great career at HPU added six points and eight rebounds. In the last point of the game, Howard Payne’s Hope Hohertz hit a free-throw to mark 1,000 points in her career.
UMHB’s Lindsay Eaton had 11 points and eight rebounds, followed by Kallie White with 10 points.
HPU was 43 percent from the floor on 26-61 shooting. UMHB shot 34 percent on 20-59 shooting. HPU outrebounded UMHB 40-34 and had 10 turnovers to UMHB’s 15.
The Lady Jackets move to 20-5 on the season and 16-5 in the ASC. UMHB goes to 21-4 overall and 18-3 in the ASC.
Howard Payne’s next game will be Friday, Feb. 26 in Pineville, LA in first-round of the ASC Championship Tournament. HPU will take on Mississippi College at 5 p.m
