HPUlogoThe Howard Payne Lady Jacket basketball team played lock down defense in the last 8 minutes and ended a two game skid in a 71-62 win over McMurry University Saturday afternoon.

With a 5 point lead entering the half, the Lady Jackets relinquished the lead and fell back by 7 with 7:33 remaining. From that point, the Lady Jackets only gave up another 8 points and scored 24 of their own to give them the 71-62 win.

Leading the Lady Jackets was Elaine Hobbs with 14 points, 3 assists, and 4 rebounds. Hope Hohertz had an all around game with 8 points, 7 steals, 6 rebounds, and 7 assists on the day. Roshonda Gayden added 12 points and 6 rebounds off the bench. McMurry was lead by Anna Berthel with 21 points and LaPorsha Alexander with 20, who also had 6 steals.

HPU on the game shot only 35 percent from the floor, but got to the foul line plenty making 25 of 27 attempts for 92 percent. McMurry was 24 of 54 shooting for 44 percent, and 12-17 from the line.

HPU moves to 13-4 overall and 9-4 in the ASC, McMurry falls to 10-6 overall and 7-5 in conference play.

The next game for the Lady Jackets is Thursday at 5:30pm, Jan. 28 against Schreiner at the Brownwood Coliseum.
