The Howard Payne Lady Jacket basketball team got 16 points each out of Roshonda Gayden and Elaine Hobbs and downed the California Lutheran University Regals 70-59 in non-conference action Thursday afternoon.
The Lady Jackets opened the game with a 6-0 lead. HPU continued their hot shooting connecting on 52% of their shots in the first half to post a 29-20 halftime advantage. Roshonda Gayden scored 9 of her 16 points in the first. Katy Sarem and Brittany Zamora also added 7 each in the opening period.
HPU started the second with a 7-2 run to extend their lead to 14, 36-22 on a 3-pointer by Clarissa Krum with 18:03 left.
Cal Lutheran battled back to within 3, 42-39 with 11:45 remaining. The Lady Jackets put together another run and posted the 70-59 win.
Howard Payne was led by Roshonda Gayden and Elaine Hobbs with 16 points each. Hope Hohertz followed with 12 points on 10 of 10 free-throw shooting.
Hobbs, Hohertz, and Gayden each had 8 rebounds. Brittany Zamora added 9 points.
Cal Lutheran was led by Starla Wright with 12 points. Chelsey Hastigan and Donielle Griggs had 11 and 10 points respectively.
