BELTON, Texas –The Howard Payne University men’s basketball team was outshot by the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor 104-86 in ASC action at the Mayborn Center on Saturday.
Mary Hardin-Baylor shot a blistering 61% from the field in the first half and was 8 of 11 from behind the arc. Howard Payne shot 46% from the field and outrebounded 23-7 in the opening period. UMHB held a 54-37 halftime advantage.
UMHB continued their hot shooting in the second half and led by around 20 most of the half. Both teams shot over 50% from the field in the game, 52% for HPU and 56% for UMHB.
UMHB was 12 of 20 from behind the three-point line for 60%. The Jackets were outrebounded by UMHB 44 to 22.
Howard Payne got career highs from Brandon Irwin with 31 and Quentin Calloway with 21. Keith Perry added 15.
UMHB was led by Dean Pele with 17 followed by Zane Johnson with 16. Sterling Phillips had 12.
HPU falls to 2-13 overall and 2-9 in ASC play. UMHB improves to 10-5, 8-3 in ASC action.
Howard Payne will be back in Brownwood next week to take on Hardin-Simmons University on Thursday and McMurry University on Saturday.
