jacketbasketball_logoBELTON, Texas – The Howard Payne University women’s basketball team was upset 63-59 by the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in American Southwest Conference action at the Mayborn Center on Saturday. 

UMHB started the game with 4 of 6 shooting from behind the arc and opened up a 14-4 lead with 13 minutes left in the first half. 

Howard Payne began to chip away at the UMHB lead. A Hope Hohertz layup with 3:36 remaining in the half brought the Lady Jackets to within one, 20-19. UMHB scored five unanswered and held a 25-19 lead at the break.

UMHB continued their run to start the second and extended their lead to 14, 37-23 with 15 minutes remaining. Down 17, Howard Payne put together a 13-0 run to cut the score to 51-47 UMHB with 5 minutes remaining. Brittany Zamora hit 3 three-pointers and a layup during the run. 

With 11 seconds remaining, Zamora had open three pointer that would have cut the UMHB lead to one but could not get it to fall. UMHB went on to win, 63-59. 

Hope Hohertz and Brittany Zamora led the Lady Jackets with 14 points each. Clarissa Krum followed with 9. 

UMHB’s Lindsay Eaton led all scorers with 20 points off the bench. Kallie White added 12. 

HPU falls to 12-3 overall and 8-3 in ASC play, while UMHB improves to 11-4, 8-3 in ASC action. 

Howard Payne will be back in Brownwood next week to take on Hardin-Simmons University on Thursday and McMurry University on Saturday.
