A four run first inning is all the Howard Payne University baseball team needed for a 4-1 win over Concordia University Nebraska Tuesday in non conference action at Don Shepard Park.
The four run first started off with Taylor Zambreski getting a sacrifice fly scoring Kyle Lloyd. That was followed by Rey Rosales’ two-run triple to right field knocking in Jake Dean and Will Garlick. For the forth and final run it was another sac fly, but this time from Jordan Hammontree scoring Rosales.
Concordia Nebraska got their run in the fifth on an error when Lloyd had a ground ball go through his legs letting Martin Rodriguez score from second.
Billy Ray Cruz picked up the win for the Jackets pitching three innings with four strikeouts and only allowing one hit. Steven Ivanoff for Concordia Nebraska received the loss pitching all eight innings. He had seven strikeouts, four walks and allowed three hits.
The Jackets are now 10-8 on the year. The Concordia Nebraska Bulldogs go to 1-13.
Howard Payne’s next set of games will be in Seguin against Texas Lutheran in a three game weekend series. The first game will be at 2 p.m. Friday, March 19 and then double header Saturday, March 20 starting at 1 pm.
