Barent Gibson, 83, passed away Tuesday, October 28, 2014 in Brownwood. A visitation service will be held on Thursday, October 30, 2014, at Davis-Morris Funeral Home, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
Barent Lee Gibson was born March 12, 1931, in York, Nebraska, to Addis Willford and Ora Maggie (Rogers) Gibson. Barent enlisted in the Navy where he faithfully served his country during World War II. He met Hazel Thornton and the two were married on December 24, 1958. After being discharged from the Navy, Barent lived in Mississippi and began his career in sheet metal and iron working. He and his family left Mississippi in 1965 and moved back to Texas, settling in Cotton Center. While there, Barent owned his own sheet metal and iron working business. He was also a member of the Sheet Metal and Iron Workers Union. In 1971, he moved his family to Brownwood and worked at 3M for a number of years. Sometime after his wife, Hazel, passed away, Barent met Norma Oliver, who became his friend and companion. He and Norma had many adventures together during their over 20 years together.Barent was an avid motorcycle enthusiast and belonged to a group known as the Goldwing Road Riders. He and Norma traveled all over the county together, logging many miles on his bike. Barent also enjoyed playing golf and was an amazing dancer. Barent was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He will be dearly missed by all that knew him and loved him.
Barent was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Hazel; his daughter, Charlyne Robinson; his son, Gary Crane; 2 brothers and 1 sister.
Barent is survived by his loving companion, Norma Oliver and her family; his son, Terry Crane; 3 daughters, Wanda Fitzhugh, Beverly Reinhardt and Cynthia Mills; 15 grandchildren, Monty, Michael, Monica, Kelli, Michele, Ronnie, Richie, Kathy, Melissa, Ken Jr., Randy, Bryan, Teri Anne, Jason and Jessica; 36 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and many friends, especially Will and Danna Greenhaw.
