Barbara “Brooks” Pittard, 82, passed away on October 5, 2015. Barbara was born in Brady, TX on April 13, 1933. A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 10, 2015 at 1:00 pm at FUMC Brownwood, 2500 11th Street.
Barbara graduated from Brady High School in 1950 and after high school she worked at the Abilene Reporter News. She would spend time in other jobs starting with her return to Brady, working as a secretary at the Brady aircraft factory. She would return to Brownwood to work for Howard Harlow and assist in publishing the Texas Service Association Magazine. After moving to College Station, she worked as a secretary for the President of Texas A&M University.
While working in Abilene, Barbara would travel to College Station with a friend where she would meet and go on a blind date with Lynn Pittard. Barbara and Lynn would marry at her Grandmother’s house in Brady on November 23, 1952. After Lynn’s return from the service in Korea, they would spend time in College Station and Floydada before moving to Hereford.Barbara was heavily involved in the activities of her four children in Hereford and Brownwood as a Cub Scout den mother, Sunday school teacher, children’s choir mother, A&M Mother’s Club (president 2 yrs.), and Brownwood Lions Mothers Club. Her devotion to her children was recognized when she won the Mother of the Year award in Hereford, TX. Even after her children were grown she stayed involved in the children’s choir and her church’s burger bar. While taking care of her children and all their activities, Barbara also ran a successful cake decorating business.
Barbara is preceded in death by her younger brother Jimmy Brooks, her parents Lee Roy and Louise Brooks, and younger sister Anita Turner.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Lynn Pitts Pittard, her children, Joel and Cheri Pittard of Boise, ID, Michael and Sharon Pittard of Marble Falls, TX, Laurie Pittard of Rotan, TX, and James and Suzanne Pittard of Conroe, TX. Six grandchildren Jeremy and Amy Pittard of Winters, CA, Sean and Bethany Pittard Rice of Colorado Springs, CO, Jamie and Lindsay Pittard Knight and Giovanni and Amanda Pittard Parra both of Lafayette, LA and Whitney Pittard and Kayci Pittard both of Austin, TX. There are 13 great grandchildren. She is also survived by older brother Lee Roy Brooks, Jr. of Las Cruces, NM, and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, family requests memorials for the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org) or the First United Methodist Church of Brownwood, TX.
