Bangs Mayor Martin Molotsky submitted a letter of resignation Thursday.
The letter dated July 15th reads:
“To the Honorable Waymond Shepherd and the rest of the Bangs City Council:
Effective the date of this letter, I officially resign my office as Mayor of Bangs.
The reasons for this decision are many and diverse. I wish not to go into detail but I feel that I do not want to be a part of the events that are soon to unfold in the next year or two with the City.
I have truly enjoyed my year in office and maybe I did something positive for the City. Hopefully, the Council will have this in mind for their future plans for Bangs.”
City Secretary Nan Billings said that the letter may not have to be accepted by city council to be fully effective.
“Our city attorney was looking at the election code which said that if no action is taken, the letter of resignation becomes effective after 8 days,” Billings said. “That way, we won’t have to call a special meeting.”
Billings said that the Bangs City Council may accept the letter at their next regular meeting just as a formality.
Mayor Pro-Tem Waymond Shepherd will serve as mayor during the interim, but the city has not determined if a special election will be required to elect a new mayor. Billings said that the next regular election for mayor would be next May and they may “ride it out” until then. Billings said that it will be up to the city council whether to hold a special election or not.
The Bangs mayor normally serves a two year term.
Molotsky has recently been at odds with council members over setting city policy and spending without city council authorization. The council unanimously approved resolutions that prohibit any city official, employee or resident from making or changing any policy of The City of Bangs without approval of the City Council.
