The Temple Jazz Orchestra, founded and directed by Thomas Fairlie, is a part of the Temple College Performing Arts Department.  Founded in 1990, what began as a collaboration of traditional music students and adult musicians from the area, has become the premier jazz ensemble in central Texas.   TJO now boasts the best professional jazz musicians and educators from an area surrounding Temple, including musicians from Waco, Killeen, Belton, Austin, Georgetown, Round Rock, Brownwood, Rockdale, and other communities.  All are devoted to jazz education and performance, and in addition to performing regularly with the Temple Jazz Orchestra, frequently act as clinicians and adjudicators.  Many TJO musicians also direct their own bands and perform professionally throughout central Texas.

abilenestarchorusAbilene Star Chorus: Sweet Adelines – Friday, May 4, 2012

In 1973 Darlene Tennison, a member of Prairie Winds Chorus in Lubbock, moved to Anson, Texas.  She loved barbershop harmony and was lost without a chorus. When she began working as a nurse at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene, she immediately started organizing a prospective chapter of Sweet Adelines.

Key City Chorus participated in its first Regional Competition in Houston where it placed 10th overall.  As a means of refreshing its image and continuing to Harmonize the World, on December 17, 2004, the chapter name was changed to ABILENE STAR CHORUS.  From 1973 to 2009, Abilene Star has had a number of directors and many members. The friendships formed within the group have been priceless.  Abilene Star maintains a membership of around 20 members.  At Regional Competition in March 2009, ABILENE STAR received the coveted “Most Improved Chorus” award.
