Brownwood Fire Department responded to a fire in the back yard of a home in the historic 1300 block of Cottage on Friday.

Smoke in the neighborhood alerted neighbors and one called the fire department shortly before 1:00 p.m.  Flames shot up over the wooden privacy fence of the home as the blaze occurred.   According to neighbors, the fire started in a chicken coop catching the nearby grass on fire.  One neighbor stated that the children who live at the home had some baby chicks in the pen, which are believed to have perished in the fire.

Brownwood Fire Department arrived on scene and quickly extinguished the fire before it could threaten the home.  Pictured above and below are firefighters dousing the remains of the chicken coop to make sure it would not reignite.
