Brownwood News – (contributed by Gene Deason) Cash awards were presented last weekend for 13 works among the 91 selected for the 22nd annual Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit, presented by the Arts Council of Brownwood.
Randy Hall, juror, was joined by Pauline McBride, Art exhibit chair, as the presentations were made at an artists’ reception Saturday on the eve of the show’s opening.
“It’s an honor and a privilege to be selected as juror,” said Hall, a professor of art at Angelo State University and recognized artist in his own right. “I always look forward to it. It’s such a wonderful event, and so well organized.”
Hall added that it’s not easy to express how difficult it is to be a juror for an art show like this.
“All artists in this room wanted to be selected,” he said. “I offer my congratulations to you also. Everyone who entered is an award winner. It’s a celebration of the art world and art community.”
Hall said the exhibit attracted a wide range of works, and that it was a “real blessing” to be able to see the works in person, instead of evaluating them from a distance with slides.
“I looked for works that had an immediate visual impact,” Hall explained, while also looking at works that were quality, with the artist showing a mastery of the medium in content, aesthetics, and technique.
“I also looked for artists who brought a passion to the work,” he said. “I congratulate all the artists in the show, and to all who participated congratulations.”
The juror said he didn’t come to the judging with a preconceived notion about what the final exhibit would look like.
“Instead, I was determined to choose the best work from what was submitted. Consequently, I feel the exhibit truly represented the aesthetic interest and concerns of the participating artists.”
The exhibit, presented by the Arts Council of Brownwood, is open daily at the Depot Civic and Cultural Center. It continues daily through Feb. 15. Hours will be 1 to 4 p.m. Sundays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. The show is open to the public at no charge.
The Salon des Refusés, featuring works submitted but not chosen for the Stars of Texas exhibit, is open at the same hours and days at The Art Center, 215 Fisk.
All works are available for purchase.
