National Night Out was held in Brown County on Tuesday, October 6th with 50 block parties being held in neighborhoods across the county.
This year, organizers for the event added a canned tuna drive to benefit Good Samaritan Ministries. Over 4000 cans of tuna were donated by local grocery stores and block parties during the event. United Supermarkets, Brookshire’s and Wal-Mart participated in the canned tuna drive and donated almost half of the cans collected.Awards were recently presented to several block parties this year in several categories including Best Food Served, Rookie of the Year, Best Overall Party and Most Canned Tuna Collected.
The block party held at on Elizabeth Drive and hosted by Gladys Bryant with Michael and Dana Cloy won the Best Overall Party Award. Bryant is pictured above accepting the award from Brownwood Police Chief Mike Corley and Good Samaritan Ministries Executive Director Angelia Bostick.
Jessie and Ellen Doyle on Brentwood (pictured above) won the Best Food award for their block party.
Co-Rookie of the Year awards were given for first-time parties. These were awarded to Jodie Armstrong and Paul Coghlan for their party on Baker Street as well as Eugene Garza for his party on Bowie Circle.

Jim and Becky Hicks (pictured above) collected the most cans of tuna at their block party on James Street in Early and were presented an award as well. Their party collected 202 cans.
Oakridge Manor won the drawing for the 43′ television provided by Shaw TV. All block party captains were entered into the drawing for a chance to win the television.
