Numerous campus achievement awards were presented to Brownwood ISD campuses at the BISD Board Meeting on Monday night, Feb. 8.  Superintendent, Dr. Reece Blincoe announced the awards, and presented plaques of recognition to the campus principals.

The first group of awards given were the Texas Education Agency (TEA) 2009 Gold Performance Awards for achievement on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test.

Woodland Heights Elementary – Commended Performance in Reading/English & Language Arts and Mathematics. Accepting the award was interim principal, Danny Cox,  and teachers Nancy Lowry and Martha Asebedo.

Northwest Elementary – Commended Performance in Reading/English & Language Arts and Mathematics. Accepting the award was principal, Stacy Smith.

East Elementary – Commended Performance in Reading/English & Language Arts and Mathematics. Accepting the award was principal, Nanda Wilbourn.

Coggin Elementary – Commended Performance in Mathematics. Accepting the award was principal, Todd Lewis.

Brownwood Intermediate School – Commended Performance in Mathematics and Science and Comparable Improvement in Mathematics. Accepting the award was principal, Connie Easterwood.

Brownwood Middle School – Commended Performance in Social Studies.  Accepting the award was principal, Bryan Allen.

Brownwood High School – Commended Performance in Social Studies.  Accepting the award was principal, Bill Faircloth.

Brownwood ISD – Commended Performance in Social Studies.  Accepting the award was deputy superintendent, Kevin Gabaree, and assistant superintendent, Liesa Land.

Woodland Heights also received a National Center for Educational Achievement (NCEA) “2009 Just for the Kids Campaign for Higher Performing Schools in Texas” certificate.

Also recognized were Northwest Elementary and Woodland Heights Elementary for receiving a Title I, Part A Distinguished Performance Award, an honor by the No Child Left Behind Coordination at the Texas Education Agency for outstanding academic performance.

In addition to the above awards, the board also held discussion on naming the playground at East Elementary “Mr. Cox’s Playground” and naming either the BISD Administration building or the BISD Board Room in honor of Dr. Don Martin.  The topic will continue to be in discussion during the next scheduled School Board meeting on March 15, 2010.

Special visitors were also announced at the meeting which included a group of students from Ann Costa’s consumer science class who were learning about parliamentary procedure and a group of Boy Scouts who attended the meeting to earn a badge.
