A case of animal cruelty is being investigated after authorities found two young dogs off of County Road 606 with gunshot wounds.  The dogs were seized by authorities and taken for medical care Sunday night.

According to Brown County Sheriff’s Office, a woman had recently been caring for two stray dogs, keeping them on her front porch until she could find a home for them.

The Sheriff’s report states that the woman and some neighbors reported that the two dogs had been shot and left injured Sunday night.  The neighbors called authorities to report the discovery of the two injured dogs, a 2-3 year old yellow lab and 4 month old black lab puppy.   The report states that neighbors believe that another neighbor shot the dogs with a small caliber rifle when the two dogs wondered onto his property.

Although the initial reports state that the larger dog had been shot in the back leg and through its testicles, after examination by the vet, the injuries were thought to be from another cause other than a gunshot.  The smaller black male dog however had been shot in the hind leg which was severely broken.

Brownwood Animal Control was called to pick up the animals and take them for treatment.  Currently they are in the care of a local veterinarian and are expected to recover.  The smaller dog could possibly lose its leg due to extensive injuries according to Freda Day at the Corrine T. Smith Animal Center.

Animal Cruelty Investigator and kennel manager for the animal center, Amy Abernathy noted that neither dog was aggressive even while authorities checked their wounds.

“They are real sweethearts, there was no reason to shoot them,” stated Abernathy.  “Both of them had collars and are they beautiful.”

Abernathy said that it is unclear if charges will be filed in this case.  It is still under investigation.

The Corinne T. Smith Animal Center is seeking donations to help pay for the veterinary expenses of these dogs.  Anyone interested in helping with the care of these dogs and possibly adopting them may call 325-646-0617 or visit their website to make an online donation.   http://www.ctsanimalcenter.org
