Brownwood Art Association invites the community to enjoy two separate events highlighting the talent of Texas artists Walt Davis of Ft Worth and Jim Evans of Arlington (Pictured left). Both events will be held at the Art Center located at 215 Fisk in Brownwood.
October 6-8: Walt David Watercolor Workshop
The Art Association is hosting a workshop led by Walt Davis, watercolor artist and retired director of the Dallas Natural History Museum, Wednesday through Friday, October 6-8, 9am to 4 pm. He will be concentrating mainly on small live sketching to build a cohesive painting, using one’s own sketches instead of photographs.
See his website and new book at exploringtheedgesoftexas.com. The cost of the workshop is $180. To sign up, please contact Kit Timmins at 646-7032. Walt Davis has been painting in watercolor for over thirty years. He has taught watercolor painting, figure drawing, and plein air sketching at Eastfield Community College, Amarillo College, Panhandle Art Center, Let There be Art studio in Canyon, and at his home studio in Commerce. He has conducted demonstrations and workshops in Dallas, Richardson, Canyon, Amarillo, Perryton, Salado, Brownwood, Fredericksburg, Greenville, and Mount Vernon.
Davis is a signature member and past president of the Southwestern Watercolor Society in Dallas and current chairman of the organization’s paint out committee.
He studied with Faith Helen Foust at Eastfield Community College and with Bud Biggs, noted commercial artist and teacher, both in Dallas. He also attended workshops with Doug Walton, Louise Cadillac, Carole Barnes, and John P. O’Neil. While employed as exhibits curator at the Dallas Museum of Natural History he worked closely with noted muralists Olin Travis and Granville Bruce accompanying the latter on sketching trips to various locations in Texas.
Davis’ paintings hang in private collections in Washington State, Montana, and Florida as well as Colorado, New Mexico, and cities throughout Texas. His work has been accepted into juried exhibitions of the Southwestern Watercolor Society, Richardson Civic Art Society, Greenville Art League, and the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies.
Exhibitions of his work have been held in the Eastfield College Gallery (Dallas, 1986), the Bath House Cultural Center (Dallas, 1992), Panhandle Art Center (Amarillo, 2010), Old Jail Art Museum (Mount Vernon, 2010), the Wine Seller (Salado, 2010), the Brownsville Heritage Complex (2010, and the Museum of Nature and Science (Dallas, 2010). His painting, First Frost, was included in the 1989 traveling exhibition of the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies. Davis created the dust jacket art and sixteen pencil drawings for the recently published book Exploring the Edges of Texas (written by he and his wife Isabel of their travels around the 4000 mile border of Texas), and cover art for the soon to be published book by Fred Tarpley entitled Wood Eternal.
In his book Exploring the Edges of Texas, Davis and his wife traveled around the borders of Texas trying to find the sites documented in the late 1800’s by Army surveyors, explorers from both the States and Mexico, artists. He then sketched the areas. Included is a rafting trip down the Rio Grande, the Buffalo Bayou in Houston, and an East Texas Indian city ruins.
Davis was curator of exhibits at the Dallas Museum of Natural History for fifteen years. In that role he created wildlife dioramas that combined three dimensional foregrounds with two dimensional murals to create the illusion of a window on the natural world. He completed exhibits set in the marshes of the Gulf Coast, the swamps of the Big Thicket, the mountains of the Big Bend, and the riverside forest of the Trinity River near Dallas. The work required close observation of nature that has given him a unique advantage in landscape painting.
