The Brownwood Art Association will host their last monthly meeting for the season with a free demonstration for the summer and will resume in September. All BAA members are encouraged to attend this meeting for the voting of amending the bylaws for active board members.
This month’s featured artist, David Harmon, will provide a demonstration that is free and open to community at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 11th at the Art Center located at 215 Fisk Avenue.
“We are very grateful to host such a gifted and talented artist as David Harmon. We are excited about inspiring those ‘closet artists,’ too shy to admit they have a desire to learn or refine their techniques. That is exactly how I thought of myself until I attended my first free art demonstration at the BAA and was so encouraged by our local talented Artist,” said BAA member Kathryn Jones. “If you have never visited the center during our art shows we always welcome anyone to walk through out gallery during anytime the doors are open for classes. Bring your young talent; it’s a great place to get inspired to develop their gift.”
David Edward Harmon was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, USA in 1953. He knew he wanted to be a painter after seeing a traveling exhibition of Vincent Van Gogh in 1970 and the German expressionist painters at the City Art Museum, St. Louis, Missouri. Harmon regards himself as an artist-educator. To effectively teach, one must have the personal ongoing expertise in their chosen field. Harmon is a painter who has shown his work in numerous museums, galleries and art centers nationally. Some exhibition venues include the Munson-Williams Proctor Institute, Utica, New York, The City Art Museum of St. Louis, Missouri, The Rice Institute of Art and History, Albany, New York and Ariel Gallery, NY, NY. He has won several awards in best of show and other categories.
Harmon has taught studio art at the college level for 29 years at 8 institutions both nationally and internationally. He is well experienced to be serving as the Associate Professor of Art for the Art and Design Department at Sterling College. Harmon was the art department director at Bethel College, Indiana for 15 years in addition to have held lectureships and professorships at the University of Arizona, Ball State University, The University of Southern Mississippi, The State University of New York and The Savannah College of Art and Design. Harmon had also initiated a professorial exchange program whilst a professor at the state university of New York. He taught painting and drawing at LIHI (now Liverpool Hope University, Liverpool, UK) the winter semester in 1988.Harmon had also traveled to Ireland visiting Dublin’s famed Trinity University and Library and the Cliffs of Moher in addition to seeing ancient cromlechs along the west coast. David lives on a farm near Sterling with his wife Susan who is also a painter. The couple has 4 sons, all whom are currently pursuing college careers. David visited Australia in 2009, where his wife Susan was pursuing her PhD in studio art at Monash University.
Because there are no new candidates for the office of president of the association, the current board has approved a change of bylaws to extend the term for the office. The Brownwood Art Association’s current President, Melanie Naylor has agreed to extend her term for another year in order to be in compliance to the Corporation Bylaw Rules. In order to proceed with current Board Members for 2013-2014 there will need to be a two-thirds vote from members for a revision to accomplish moving forward.
The Art Association will continue throughout the summer months with drawing classes with artist Jeremy Serna, Tuesday nights 6:00-8:00pm; with People Painters every Wednesday using live models from 1:00-4:00pm; followed by Thursdays Beginner Acyclic classes taught by artist Jonathan Ceniceros. The cost for class instruction is only $10.00. Contact Melanie Naylor for more information or to register at 325/647-8543.
