Herbert was born in Cleburne, Texas on June 8, 1916 to Arthur Herbert Sr. and Maude Quillin Lamkin. He grew up in Cleburne, Godley, Granbury and Houston. He graduated from Milby High School in Houston. He married Margaret Phelan of Houston on June 20, 1939. Herbert and Margaret moved to Brownwood where they resided for the next 40 years. In Brownwood, Herbert worked as a Sales Manager for Lamkin Brothers with his three older brothers. Later, Herbert, with partner Herbert Martin, owned L &M Mineral, and sold livestock minerals in the southwestern United States. Herbert was ordained as a Deacon at Coggin Avenue Baptist Church. He also served as a Deacon at Early First Baptist Church, First Baptist Church Brownwood, and Circle Drive Baptist Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
In 1978, Herbert and Margaret moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado where they resided until Margaret’s death in 1986. In 1989, Herbert married Edilene Allison and resided in San Antonio for the next 25 years. Herbert and Eddie were active at Wayside Chapel in San Antonio.
Herbert is survived by his wife of 25 years, Edilene; five children, Herbert Lamkin III and wife, Linda, of Brownwood, Kenneth Lamkin and wife Muriel, of Early, Linda Grewe and husband, Frank of San Antonio, Cherri Allison Hicks-Wallace and husband, Don of San Antonio and Keith Allison and wife Tina, of Los Angeles, California. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Chris Lamkin, Stacie Lamkin, Brad Lamkin, Mark Lamkin, Robin Cunningham, Leslie Lamkin, Lindsey Grewe, Kelly Weckerly, Reagan Hicks, Carlton Hicks, Ryeland Allison, and Allison Gonzalez, 20 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents, His wife of 47 years, Margaret, sisters Fannie Boyett and Margaret, brothers Edger, Lee, Charlie and Jack, granddaughter Astrid Barber-Bale, and great-great-grandson Liam Shields.
Herbert was a Master Mason, receiving his 70 year pin in 2012. Herbert was an avid walker, routinely walking several miles daily up until his 98th birthday. He proudly boasts his ten hikes up Pikes Peak in Colorado after the age of 60. He enjoyed traveling and visited all 50 states and over ten countries. Herbert enjoyed spending time with family and friends playing 42, Canasta, and other board games.
