Peggy Crow was known to her friends and her family as the kind of Christian everyone aspired to be. She loved Jesus and everyone knew it. She was born Arma Lee Smith, October 4, 1921 to Ruby and Annie Smith in Spring Creek, TX. She had one older brother, Clifton, who preceded her in death as did her parents. She attended the San Saba school system and upon graduation came to Brownwood to attend Daniel Baker College. It was during her college years that she adopted the name “Peggy” by which most all of her friends in Brownwood knew her.
While attending Daniel Baker, she met a handsome Howard Payne football player and fell in love. She and Albert (William A. Crow, Jr.) married on March 25, 1939. Their first child, Peggy Joyce, was born during Albert’s football days at Howard Payne, earning him the nickname “Pappy” among his teammates. Soon, however, Albert reported for duty with the US Army and Peggy moved back to San Saba. After Albert’s tour of military service they moved back to Brownwood where they were blessed with a son, James Albert and a daughter, Sandra Kay. Peggy and Albert raised their family in Brownwood and remained together until his untimely death in 1977.
Peggy was passionately loved, respected and honored by a host of family. Her three children and their spouses, 9 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and a new great-great-grandchild who she had the joy and privilege of recently visiting. From the birth of her first grandchild, she was affectionately known as Mema and that may well be the name by which she will be known in heaven! She was also loved by friends of all ages from her church, her neighborhood, and throughout the town. Mema lived a full and a giving life. She will be greatly missed.
A private service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in her name to The Victory Life Building Fund or the Brownwood Senior Citizens Center.
Services are under the direction of Davis-Morris Funeral Home.
