As the ARK continues its recognition of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, they make another effort to help the public be more aware of the dangers of domestic violence.
On Tuesday evening, the ARK held a candlelight vigil at the Girling Center for Social Justice in probably their most telling effort yet.
Those who attended heard a powerful story from local resident Andrea Moore as she recounted the events that led to the death of her daughter in the grips of domestic violence in 2004.
“I am a mother who lost a daughter to violence,” Moore said after a recount of her daughter’s situation. “I guess if I could say anything to anybody that is in a situation like that it would be that you don’t have to go through this. There are ways you can get help.”
In remembering her daughter, Moore said, “She would have been 31 years old last month and we really miss her.”
After this powerful presentation, participants lit candles and the names were read of those killed as a result of domestic violence in the area.
To end the evening, those in attendance read a pledge aloud that said:
“I pledge to take action against domestic violence by choosing not to remain silent.
Instead, I will speak up for those in my neighborhood, family, work or school who are victims of abuse.
I will crate a peaceful and safe environment in my home; and will not raise my hand in violence nor my voice in anger.
By living this pledge, I am joining with others to end violence in my home and community.”
