The Texas State Comptroller’s office released sales tax revenue information and allocations for the month of May 2010 for cities across the state. These sales tax numbers reflect taxes collected in March 2010.
Texas Comptroller Susan Combs will distribute $567 million in May sales tax allocations to local governments across the state on Friday, up 4.7 percent compared to May 2009.
“This modest increase is welcome after 14 consecutive months of year-over-year declines,” Combs said. “Retail trade saw a nearly 5 percent increase in collections, and gains also occurred in the manufacturing sector. Offsetting this were remittances from the oil and natural gas production sector and construction, which continued to decline, but at rates moderating substantially from those seen earlier this fiscal year.
So far this calendar year, sales tax allocations to cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts across the state are down 4.8 percent compared to a year ago.
Although still showing a decline of 4.41% in May as compared to the same month last year, Brownwood’s decline is moderating. Brownwood city officials are expecting the declines to continue to moderate for the remainder of the year.
Sales tax allocations for Bangs, Blanket, and Early are postitive for May posting some nice increases over the same month last year.
Year to date, Early is slightly up on sales tax allocations while Brownwood, Bangs, and Blanket are in the red.
