Over 40 dogs are in need of new homes after an ordinance violation on June 23rd resulted in their removal from a Comanche home. The violation, which had originally been thought to be a case of animal cruelty, involved the help of Brownwood Animal Control Officer Amy Abernathy who assisted City of Comanche in removing up to 43 dogs and an unknown number of cats from a Comanche residence, according to Comanche city officials.
Since that night, the owner of the animals has been evicted from the residence and has surrendered his right of ownership of the animals so that they can be adopted and properly cared for, according to City of Comanche Administrator Robert Evans.
Although the case has been seen in court, no arrest was made. Evans stated, “We are assessing his (the previous owner of the animals) situation. We were worried about the dogs and needed to get that taken care of first.”
Evans stated that there are up to 43 dogs up for adoption, some of them are not suitable for adoption as a veterinarian who examined them stated in court that several of the animals are in need of therapy. Evans did not release the exact reason and extent of the therapy on Friday afternoon. A number of the animals have been adopted; however, Evans confirmed that there are plenty more in need of adoption and good homes.
Many of the dogs, in a variety of mixed breeds and ages, are available for adoption, some of which are young dogs, according to Comanche’s All Pets Alive (CAPA) shelter officials.
Pictured above is a mother dog, “Prissy,” with her three puppies that are approximately two weeks old and are just beginning to open their eyes. Below are more photos of some of the dogs that are up for adoption. CAPA officials state they hope Prissy and her puppies will go to a rescue because the pups are too young to be adopted.
“We hope to save as many as possible but I’m not sure how much time they will get,” said Laurie Lindsey, vice president of CAPA.
