Lake Brownwood State Park will host their annual First Day Hike at 2 p.m. on Friday, January 1st.

The public is invited to meet with the rangers at the Oak Trail Parking lot where two trails of different length and difficulty will be offered.

For those who prefer an easier stroll, a group will be taking a hike on the Oak Trail to the Opossum Loop. This trail offers a less than one mile hike, is very easy and on relatively flat ground with no hills. Those participating in this hike will still want to dress appropriately and bring water and binoculars to view the birds well through the dormant mesquite and post oak trees.

The Nopales Ridge Trail is the park’s first mountain bike trail with a length of 2.9 miles. This trail is a more strenuous hike with some long slopes.  Hikers may want to bring a hiking stick, sturdy shoes, binoculars for wildlife viewing and plenty of drinking water.

According to park officials, although the above hikes are the only ones led by rangers, other trails are also available for hiking, including the complete Texas Oak Trail and the Lakeside Trail.  The weather forecast is expected to be cool, but dry.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department encourages the public to “start the year off on the right foot, the left foot, or any foot — find a First Day Hike in a state park near you on New Year’s Day!”

State park staff and volunteers will guide most hikes, and will talk about native plants, animals or park history along the way.
