deerprojectGood Samaritan Ministries reports that as of Monday, November 22, there have been 2,674 pounds of venison donated to The Deer Project this year.  Their goal for the year is 12,000 so there is still plenty of need for donations to make this year’s goal a reality.

The Deer Project began as a way to put lean protein on the plates of the hungry in Brown County.

It all started during the 2008 hunting season and has grown each year thereafter.  The 2009-2010 hunting season brought in 6,049 pounds of meat to the freezers of Good Samaritan Ministries.  That harvest provided 24,196 meals to hungry families.

The Good Samaritan Ministries would like to double what was raised last year to bring in 12,000 pounds of processed venison and need the help of local hunting enthusiasts to meet that goal.

In the past, GSM has asked the hunters who were donating their deer to pay the processing fee or to call and see if money was available.  This year, through extensive fundraising efforts of GSM and its supporters, hunters need only bring their deer to a participating project and tell them they’d like to donate it to GSM’s Deer Project.

The processors participating with The Deer Project are M&M Processing in Zephyr, Ted’s Deer Processing in Owens and Santa Anna Wild Game Processing in Santa Anna.

In order to make The Deer Project possible, GSM relies heavily, not only on fundraising efforts, but on the donations from individuals, churches and businesses who choose to give to the program.

Rather than asking people to donate money to process an entire deer, GSM has simplified the process even more.  One dollar per pound of meat is all it takes!  And one pound of meat provides four servings of lean protein.
