It was a tough homecoming night for the Brownwood Lions with fumbles, penalties and missed tackles, allowing the Saints to take home a win of 38-15.
According to Head Coach Bob Shipley, although it was a great crowd, Brownwood just didn’t play their best, allowing All Saints to be left wide open in many plays.
“Our kids could have played harder at times,” stated Shipley. “Did our kids play hard? Sure they did and for those who did, I’m proud of them.”
Injuries played a role as well in the game with key starting players out with injuries including quarterback Mitch Stephens. Some players who were starting in this week’s game, including running back Stehl Ratliff, were playing with arm casts which were affecting plays.
Shipley stated that All Saints was, “no doubt a very good football team” and appreciated that their coach was a class act for not running up the score.
“I’m not going to sugar coat it, they could have made two or three more touchdowns if they’d wanted,” said Shipley.
The Lions did hold the Saints scoreless in the second half and were able to make one last touchdown with just over a minute left in the game.
Coach Shipley said he and the other coaches believe in the team.
“The way we played is a bad reflection on us as coaches. We aren’t as good of coaches this year as we were last year,” said Shipley. “Don’t give up on these kids. We still have a lot of games to play, the ones that count. The coaches aren’t going to give up.”
Lions enter district play next week with an overall record of 4-2 as they look to play Big Spring who is 0-6. Shipley stated that Big Spring is better than their record indicates because the teams they have been playing have had winning records.
