Written by Amanda Coers – On Saturday the Corinne T. Smith Animal Center put out a call for help on their Facebook Page looking for dog food donations. The good folks at AgMart stepped up with over 1,000 pounds of dog food, courtesy of their supplier, Nelson Wholesale. The Brownwood-based distributer supplies pet food and agricultural goods to independent feed stores and pet centers across the nation.
“They can always rely on us,” said Cody Richmond, President of Nelson Wholesale. “Pets are the love of John’s life,” said Richmond, speaking of Nelson Wholesale Owner and CEO, John Harkey.
“He loves giving back to the community. He loves helping the shelter because that means helping a pet.”
Staff from the animal shelter arrived to pick up the generous donation. It took several trips to haul the bags of food to the shelter.
“We appreciate what the shelter does, they’re a very good cause,” said Richmond.
The Corinne T. Smith Animal Center was created in Brown County in 1974 and was originally called the Brown County Humane Society. The first shelter was built in 1975 and was located at 3016 Milam Drive, where it still operates today. The organization changed the name of the shelter in 2006 to honor Corinne T. Smith, one of the original organizers of the Humane Society in Brown County and its director for almost thirty years.
