Members of the VFW Post 3278 Ladies Auxiliary spent Monday morning updating the “Wall of Heroes” at the Brown County Courthouse which recognizes local active military members.
Auxiliary member Joyce Leidig said that the group is looking to make sure all active military members are a part of the wall which features a photo with a sticker of their name, rank and where they serve.
“We’ve been doing this since ’04 or ’05,” Leidig said. “We had it on a poster board in the beginning, but we got so many, the commissioners let us do this and the County Clerks’ office was nice to help out.”
Leidig said that they are taking down about 64 photos from the wall because they are no longer active duty, but they want to encourage any more recently enlisted military members to sign up to be included on the wall.
“I don’t think we have as many serving right now. I know a lot of them are getting out of the service,” Leidig said. “Another thing is that we really have not promoted this in quite a while so a lot of people don’t know about it.”
The Wall of Heroes is not just to honor Brown County military, anyone interested in honoring an active military man or woman may contact Joyce Leidig at 325-784-5014 or by emailing leidig@centex.net. Pictures of active duty Military can be emailed with their name, rank and branch of service. Pictures may also be taken to the County Clerk’s office where an information form can be completed. The picture will be scanned and returned.
