Brown County Emergency Responders were called out to an area about a mile off of FM 586 south of Bangs about 9:45 Monday morning, after receiving a call of an accidental shooting.

Brown County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the scene and established a landing zone for the AirEvac Lifeteam helicopter to land. The victim was identified as Gary Edward Johnson of Dallas. He was airlifted to Scott & White Hospital in Temple in serious condition.

Brown County Sheriff’s Office reports that Johnson was dove hunting with his 7-year-old grandson, who lives in Brown County, and some friends from Dallas. After shooting a dove, he went to retrieve the bird and bent over. His shotgun accidentally discharged.

The shooting was listed as an accidental discharge.

He was conscious and talking when he was airlifted from the scene. Updates on his condition weren’t available Tuesday morning.
