EscamillaAbelAbel C. Escamilla, 89, of Brownwood, Texas, passed away Friday, February 17, 2012 at Brownwood Regional Hospital after a lengthy illness.  Abel was born on July 8, 1922 in Hearne, Texas, to Margarita Cortéz and Piedad Escamilla.  He married María Marta “Lola” Sánchez on October 17, 1942 in Rodríguez, Nuevo León, México.

Abel was a loving and caring son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.  Dad was “old school” raising a family as a role model, setting an example of honesty, hard work and responsibility.  An avid gardener, he also had a passion for baseball and singing.  At times he would break into song and regale us with “Dos Arbolitos,” or corridos of his youth.  Dad was also quite the talker and would strike up a conversation at the drop of a hat.  As a life-long farmer, he also continued with gardening after he retired.  He took great pride in his yard and tended it like a baby.  His acre garden was considered one of the best gardens in Hale County.  He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Those left to cherish his memory are his sons, Abel Escamilla, Jr. of Denton, Texas, Robert M. Escamilla and his wife Hilda of North Richland Hills, Texas, Freddy Escamilla and his wife Kyoung of El Paso, Texas, Jesse Escamilla of Brownwood, Texas, and Hans Adrian Escamilla; daughters, Rosa Escamilla of California, Gloria Moreno and her husband Joe Moreno of Defiance, Ohio, Maria Stella Nieto of North Richland Hills, Maggie Bohde of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Irma Reynolds and her husband Richard of Harker Heights, Texas and Maggie Bohde of Ft. Wayne, Indiana; and 25 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren and 5 great great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by his sister Joaquina Díaz of Kennewick, Washington and various nieces and nephews.

Abel was preceded in death by his wife María Marta Escamilla, his infant son Gilberto Escamilla, his twin sister Adela Martínez, sisters Antoñia, Luz, Emilia and Juanita, and brothers Robert and José Escamilla.

Visitation and viewing will be from 6 to 8:00 P.M. followed by a rosary and the eulogy on Wednesday, February 22nd, at Heartland Funeral Home, 303 Early Blvd. in Early, Texas.  A mass will also be held at the Heartland Funeral Home the following day, Thursday, February 23rd, 2012 at 11:00 AM.  The burial will be at Eastlawn Memorial Park in Early, Texas.  A reception will follow
