This week Camp Corral is being held at the 4-H Conference Center on Lake Brownwood. Camp Corral is a free camp for the children of wounded or disabled military veterans, sponsored by Golden Corral. The camp is for children ages 8-15 whose parents have served in any of the military branches.  The camp at Lake Brownwood, is one of nine camps taking place across the country.

“Golden Corral has always been a supporter of military families. Last year they started with one camp in Georgia, and this year there are nine,” states Mike Carroll, Extension Program Specialist for 4-H.

This summer the camps are taking place here in Texas, at the Brownwood 4-H conference center, and in Georgia, Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, Ohio, and Kansas.

The camp started on Sunday and will run through Friday. The campers will get to experience many activities through daily sessions. Some of the daily activities include: swimming, crafts, archery, hiking, ropes course, dancing, and target sports.

Volunteers from all over the state have come to Brownwood to help with this camp. Virgie Jurado, from Marfa, TX, and her daughters wanted to come to this camp in particular to help out.

“My daughter Hannah felt very strongly about this camp, she really wanted to come and I wanted to make sure she got here and had the back-up she needed, so that she could back up these kids,” said Jurado. “This specific camp, I felt was in addition to the regular 4-H camps, so much more worthwhile.”

Kids from all over the state of Texas get the opportunity to come to this camp for free through the sponsorship of Golden Corral, and the support of the 4-H system. Carroll has noticed the positive impact the camp has had on the campers.

“The camp started on Sunday, and I have noticed how the kids have all started to bond, even with being from all different parts of the state,” says Carroll.

Jurado reveals what she has taken away from this camp, and the positive affect it has had on her, and her daughters.

“Each one of them brings something different to the table, and a new perspective. I’ve learned some much more from each one of them that I didn’t have when I got here,” said Jurado.
