The 2016 Brown County Youth Fair Fashion Show took place Tuesday evening giving entrants a chance to show off their self-made clothing projects.
Exhibitors modeled outfits they personally sewed, which were judged Monday on appearance and construction. Each competitor was judged on their modeling abilities as well.
Home Economics General Supervisor Beverly Sullivan stated that each year the entrants continue to impress her with projects that get “better and better every year.”
“In the judges’ comments, there were only a few things that were overlooked such as pressing the garment,” said Sullivan. “In choosing grand and reserve champions, the judges often had a difficult time choosing between the two.
Sullivan stated that the entrants not only get to construct a garment they will enjoy wearing, but that they also learn a lot, including how to spot quality construction, avoiding cheaply made clothing when they purchase ready-to-wear clothing from a store, and that homemade clothing is not cheap – that it often costs much more to construct than garments bought in a retail store.
Regarding the skill of contestants Sullivan stated, “These kids are using materials I wouldn’t try, and I’ve been sewing since I was six. They pull out all the stops. That’s the reason I keep coming back. I enjoy it, it’s strictly for the kids.”
