Relay for Life of Brown Countyofficially kicked off the 2012 campaign at Bruner Auto Group on Saturday, March 3rd from 11:00am until 2:00pm.

There were booths with different fundraisers and raffles (including an iPad, yoga session, a dart gun and a $50 tattoo gift certificate), a live broadcast on KOXE, hot dogs, plus a sign up booth with information for teams as well as sponsors. All proceeds from the event benefit the American Cancer Society.

The 2012 Relay for Life will be held Friday and Saturday, June 1-2 at Gordon Wood Stadium.  As of noon Saturday, there were 33 teams signed up to participate this year and more forming according to organizers at the event.  Chairman of the 2012 Relay for Life Brown County is Tammy Robinson.

At their groundbreaking on October 13, 2011, Bruner made a $1000 donation to the 2012 American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month.  Bruner Auto Group will also have a team in the Relay for Life. (Pictured below with the check are Bruner’s general manger Jim Stanley and salesman Rick Newton).

TEAMS: Teams are generally 8-10 people and have goals of raising $100 per person or $1000 per team. Of course this amount is not required. If you do not have a team and wish to be on a team, please call Lainey Hall at 325-642-0463. To register a team is $25 and team members raising $100 or more will receive a Relay for Life T-shirt. Teams can set up tents for their overnight stay and are encouraged to decorate them and have some fun raising money for a great cause.

Survivors are the reason we Relay. A survivor is anyone who has ever heard the words “You have cancer.” All cancer survivors in the community are invited to attend Relay For Life.  The goal of the event is to create a world where more people survive cancer – so they can celebrate another birthday. This year more than 11 million people will be able to do that thanks to the support of millions of dedicated Relay participants. Survivors are the guests of honor at Relay. Some Relay For Life events may offer survivors special T-shirts or sashes or hold a special reception for survivors and caregivers. However, most Relays open with the Survivors Lap where survivors lead the way around the track while being honored and applauded by all participants. Being a part of the Survivors Lap allows survivors to celebrate what they’ve overcome while inspiring and motivating their community to fight. Survivors are proof that cancer can be defeated. Caregivers are also in important part of the fight against cancer and are encouraged to participate and register for the Relay. To register as a survivor or caregiver, please contact Becky Smith at 325-647-9082.

Sponsors for the relay and its different events are also being sought at this time.  Please contact Margaret Carter at 325-642-1309 for more information.

Fundraisers are being held by members of teams throughout the months before the Relay in June, please be a part and help teams reach the goals they have set.  BrownwoodNews.com will post Relay for Life fundraisers as they approach, check back often to learn how you can support the 2012 Relay for Life Brown County.

No matter where you are, there’s a place for you at Relay and you can make a difference today by signing up online to start your own team or by simply making a donation.
