A new show division, Ag Mechanics, was added to the Brown County Youth Fair in 2012 and was a great success with 5 schools represented and 14 projects entered.
Taylor Roberts and Blake Standbridge of Bangs FFA earned the Grand Champion and Showmanship ribbons along with a box full of prizes for their camouflage picnic table. (Pictured above, left to right are Roberts and Standbridge)
Roberts and Standbridge stated that they worked about a month and a half building and painting the table which was intricately painted camouflage with stencils that they also handmade. The table is intended to be placed at a deer camp, which is the reasoning behind the paint job, and was made of metal so that it would be more weather resistant.
Colt Waddle received the Reserve Champion ribbon along with a box of prizes for his efforts building a bumper and headache rack which fit his own pickup. (Pictured with Waddle is BCYF Queen Contestant Larissa Salazar).
Waddle explained that he built these accessories to customize his truck.
Another participant, Albert Bennie a senior and drum major at Early High School, built a drum major podium which will be used by the EHS Band.
The Ag Mechanics division was organized by Justin Hopkins Early ISD ag teacher and Jason McGibbon Blanket ISD ag teacher. Judges for the event were Royce Rogers, retired ag teacher from Blanket ISD; Mal Aaron, retired wood/metal shop teacher from Brownwood Middle School; and Toby Long, ag teacher at Hamilton High School.
Organizers of the event wished to thank local businesses and individuals that supported the event by donating many prizes and “goody bags” for all contestants. These donors include: Pate’s Hardware, Sherwin Williams, McCoy’s, Higgenbotham’s, Clark Tractor of Comanche, Tractor Supply Company, J. L. Chasteen, U-Name-It Embroidery of Comanche, Texas America Safety Company (TASCO), Robert & Jo Damron and Sweetwater Steel.
