On March 29th, Texas State Technical College hosted their Annual High School Welding Competition on the Brownwood campus. The one day competition is designed for high school students to showcase their fabrication and welding skills. Local area students from Blanket, Brownwood and Coleman participated in this year’s contest.
Nine students showcased their skills with the on site competition, which was broken into categories by process, MIG and stick processes.
Students were also asked to enter group and individual projects into the competition. The projects were completed prior to the event and accompanied by a portfolio. An award was also given for best portfolio.
Event judges were from industry, past and present. They evaluated the welds and projects on: consistency, quality, appearance, uniformity, presentation, penetration, heat, speed, ability to follow directions and overall workmanship. Prizes included welding hoods, sleeves, gloves, strikers, chalk. Trophies were designed and created by current TSTC students. Derek Little, Program Chair of the Manufacturing and Engineering Division presented the students with their awards.
