The 48th Annual Brown County Rodeo got off to a great start on Thursday with nearly 350 contestants entered for the weekend’s events of bull riding, bareback riding, barrel racing, steer wrestling, saddle bronco riding, tie down roping, team roping and break away roping. The rodeo will continue Friday, June 10 and Saturday, June 11 (starting at 8pm each night) at the Earl Q. Wilson Arena/ Brown County Youth Fair Grounds on Hwy 377 S.
Thursday night started off with the traditional Grand Entry with lots of local riders and beautiful horses. Powerful rodeo stock from Terry Walls Ranch gave the cowboys some tough competition leaving only one bull rider qualifying. Matt Keaney of Midland broke the 2010 winning time in tie-down roping.
KRBC-News anchorman Randy Turner has the role of announcer this year. There were also special appearances of Miss Rodeo Texas, Celeste Harvey of Houston and Miss Brown County Youth Fair, Jordan Cadenhead. The Coleman County Cowgirls entertained with a horseback drill team performance.
Entertainment from rodeo clown Slim Garner of Wickenburg, Arizona included a “fishing boat” and “airplane taxi” with lots of surprises and fun. Bull rider Cody Harris of Brownwood co-starred in one routine riding the airplane taxi. Harris will also be bull riding on Saturday night.
One new event this year was Wild Cow Milking, three of the four participants were from the Brownwood Department: Jody Horton, Jesse Castillo, and Evan Owen. Michael Sangerman also lended a helping hand in the act. (See video below). With a time limit of two minutes, these firemen had an impressive official time of 64.79 seconds. Who knew our firemen were skilled in so many trades?
Rodeo fans will not want to miss a chance to see three time professional PRCA World Champion bull rider (2008, 2009 and 2010) 24-year-old J.W. Harris who will be riding on Saturday night.
