The following letter to the editor was submitted and reflects on a simpler time and just how costs of things along with wages have have changed over the decades:

I found an old Brownwood bulletin under the flooring in an old house dated March 1 1959.

Evidently there was a Safeway at 101 E. Depot back then. I was amazed at the food prices in 1959. 1 pound bag of carrots 7 cents, ground beef 43 cents a pound, coffee 1 pound bag 59 cents and a 2 pound pkg of sausage for 61 cents. Also men’s 100% wool suits were $29.75.

I wasn’t in Texas in 1959 but was in Indiana working for $1.25 per hour. My monthly income now equals what I made in a year in 1959. Not sure if that was the good old days but interesting to look at.
