The 18th annual Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit opened Saturday night with a reception and awards ceremony showcasing artistic works from across Texas.
This year’s exhibit features 133 works of art from 87artists that were selected by juror Warren Taylor of San Angelo out of 323 entries.
Taylor stated that he could go on and on and give more awards to the artists and that this was a very strong show. Below is the statement he gave regarding the work entered in the show and how he determined which works were to be exhibited.
“After nearly fifty years of looking at art, teaching it and making it, I have formed several observations.
An art object is a complex symbol of information. It informs us about who made it, how it was made, and when it was made.
Who made it? Does the work reflect some of the maker’s unique identity as an individual? Does the work share some original and sensitive thinking, or does it rely too much on the manner of other artists?
How was it made? Does the work display a confident and mature handling of the materials? Is there an affection for the medium and does it display a style fitted to the image? Is the work well executed, or is it overworked or handled too hastily?
When was it made? This can be tricky. We know we all live in a complex and complicated world, but we want our work to reflect a current intent without becoming confused. We have the right to seek refuge and serenity in what we make, yet there can be a problem with dwelling in the past.
I know these are many questions. When I stand in front of a work of art, I can ask, ‘What do you have to tell me?’ In the case of this exhibition, I am told many wonderful things and given generous feelings.
Thanks to all involved in hosting this wonderful exhibition!”
Awards and cash prizes totaling $7250 were given to 16 artists in a variety of categories. This year’s $1000 Dorothy Mays Best of Show Award was given to Elise Techentine of Granbury – “Balance on the Edge” (Granbury). Techentine is pictured above with her sculpture.
