StarsOfTexasIt’s time for artists across the state of Texas to get their artwork ready for the 14th Annual Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit which runs for two weeks and will award more than $6000 in prizes.  Each February, the Brownwood Civic and Cultural Center hosts the annual exhibit.

Entries for the annual event will be accepted Friday, January 27 from 5-6:30pm or Saturday, January 28th from 9am-12 noon at the Depot Civic & Cultural Center where the exhibit will be take place.  The exhibit will be open to the public on February 5-17, 2012 and promises to be another great event for the Brownwood area.

The exhibit that began in 1999 in order to showcase the newly restored Santa Fe Depot continued through the years due to its overwhelming popularity.  Over time, the exhibit has grown not only in the number of entries, but with new awards being added.  In fact, last year there were 361 pieces of art from which juror Randy Bacon of Albany, Texas had to choose only 136 for the show.

The Salon des Refuse, sponsored by the Brownwood Art Association, took in 129 pieces of artwork that were not accepted at the Stars Exhibit for display and sale. The Brownwood Art Association Art Center is located at 215 Fisk Ave and will again be open hosting the Salon des Refuse for to the public to view each day, February 5th thru the 17th.

In 2010, a new award was added thanks to the generosity of Betty Martin, The Don C. Martin Memorial Sculpture Award for $500.00.  Last year another award has been made by the Brownwood Art Association, The Mary Cadenhead Memorial Pastel Award for $250.00.  This year features two new awards, The Larry J. Elling Memorial Photography Award for $500.00 thanks to the generosity of Marcia Elling and the Oil Medium Award for $500.00 thanks to the generosity of an anonymous sponsor.

Sponsors this year are in part: The Arts Council of Brownwood, The City of Brownwood, Barr Fabrication LLC, Jane Ellen Jamar, Margaret and Stuart Coleman, The Kohler Company, Big Country Ford Lincoln, J. Hite Homes, Inc., Betty Martin, Diane and Tommy Winn, Texas State Optical, The Family of Mary Cadenhead, Marla Stanley, Charles and Kay Beth Stavley, and Marcia Elling.

This year’s Juror is Terry Morrow, an artist-teacher.  Morrow received his BFA degree from the University of Texas, Austin, and his MS degree from the University of Indiana, Bloomington, with additional graduate study at both UT, Austin, and the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Following teaching positions at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, and the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga, Terry joined the Faculty of the (then) Department of Art, school of Arts and Sciences, at Texas Technological College in 1968. From the beginning, his primary teaching responsibilities at Texas Tech have been in the areas of printmaking and drawing.

In 2001 Terry was one of the principal initiators for the new College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) at Texas Tech University, and in 2006 he spearheaded development of the new BA degree in the School of Art. Most recently he was one of the primary organizers for a first-of-its-kind interdisciplinary course involving the CVPA areas of Art, Music, and Theatre and Dance.

As an artist-teacher, Terry knows the importance of continued research, and his own “studio time” is a priority. His work is exhibited in a number of national and international shows, including National Works on Paper Exhibition, UT Tyler, Tyler, TX; the Bradley International Works on Paper, Bradley University, Bradley, IL; Border to Border 9, Austin Peay College, Clarksville, TN; and the Annual National Drawing and Small Sculpture Exhibition, Del Mar College, Corpus Christi, TX. Terry also has a number of solo and group exhibitions to his credit and is included in the collections of several universities in Texas.
